In 2005, Motionspot Co-Founder, James, broke his neck diving into the sea in Portugal. After eight months spent in Stoke Mandeville hospital, James returned home to his apartment in London to find a range of equipment had been installed to help make his life easier. There was just one problem; it looked and felt like a hospital rather than a home. James and his wife Katherine went from living in a space designed to suit their style and taste, to somewhere extremely clinical.
Motionspot is born
Ed, a close friend, offered to help James (and Katherine) find something better. After weeks of searching, Ed found the same issues kept coming up time and again – limited choice, poor advice, little to no focus on the design of the built environment or consideration for aesthetics. When James and Ed first worked on their business concept, they knew they wanted to create a company that would help create accessible and enabling environments for all. The concept had never been demonstrated before, but with the help of James and Katherine, Ed set up Motionspot to make sure no-one else must endure the same frustrations.
Why Motionspot?
When the business was launched in 2012, we had the vision to improve independent movement or ‘Motion’ in one place or ‘Spot’. Motionspot was born. The yellow spot was inspired by the 2012 Paralympic gold medals held in London in the same year we launched.
Transforming spaces and lives.
We are motivated by delivering a positive impact on the lives of the people who use the buildings, spaces, and places we contribute to. We aim to help our clients transform these environments to welcoming, safe, and enabling for all, across the world. We believe that to create truly inclusive environments people with a broad range of protected characteristics and identities, including disability, neurodiversity, age, race, ethnicity, religion, belief and more must be considered throughout the design process. This starts with engaging a broad range of people from the outset of projects and throughout.
The Motionspot design ethos raises the bar significantly beyond the minimum standards of building regulations and combines style with functionality to create uplifting inclusive spaces that are welcoming, easy to navigate, and accessible for all.
