Wellington College
Project Brief
Motionspot was appointed as inclusive design consultant for Wellington College, a 400-acre coeducational boarding and day school in Crowthorne, England, rooted in values of Kindness, Respect, Courage, Integrity, and Responsibility.
Our role focused on developing an Estates Inclusive Design Guide to embed equitable principles across new builds and refurbishments, aligning with the college’s EDI Approach and philosophy of fusing heritage with modernity. We helped mitigate historic constraints limiting accessibility for current and future students, staff, and visitors.
Project Scope
Motionspot collaborated with Wellington College to create a campus-wide Inclusive Design Vision, plan, and technical guide, starting with stakeholder engagement and a strategic framework for inclusive environments.
Inclusive Design Vision & Strategy:
- Crafted a vision for equitable, welcoming spaces that foster belonging, informed by the college’s EDI Dimensions and protected characteristics including neurodiversity, disability, gender, faith, and mental health.
Stakeholder Engagement Workshops:
- Facilitated sessions with students and staff to generate Key Insights and Vision Statements, capturing lived experiences and intersectional needs.
Inclusive Design Standards Development
- Project Commitments & Principles: Defined actionable commitments covering step-free mobility, multi-sensory wayfinding, inclusive sanitary facilities, cultural representation, health-supporting amenities, and enhanced visual/auditory environments.
- Technical Guidance Framework: Developed principles and requirements for pre-arrival information, real-time communication, and sensory-inclusive navigation to support independent use across the historic campus.
Project Impact
Motionspot’s framework positions Wellington College as a benchmark for inclusive educational environments within historic settings, proving that heritage and accessibility can coexist. By embedding lived-experience insights and clear commitments, the guide empowers the college to evolve its campus equitably, enhancing belonging, independence, and wellbeing for all. This strategic foundation sets a replicable model for heritage institutions, ensuring inclusive design drives community strength and future readiness.
