Legal and General
Project brief
Motionspot was appointed as the Inclusive Design Lead for 10 Coleman Street, Legal & General’s new 190,000 sq. ft London headquarters within the Woolgate Building, designed by Perkins & Will. The project aims to deliver a sustainable, inclusive workplace that goes beyond compliance to create a consistent, equitable experience for all building users.
Project Scope
Appointed at the outset of RIBA Stage 2, Motionspot’s scope was designed to run in parallel with late Stage 1 activities, embedding inclusive design principles from the earliest stages of briefing and stakeholder engagement. The role has involved shaping a project-wide Inclusive Design Strategy and ensuring that inclusivity remains central to all design decisions through continuous review, consultation, and collaboration with Legal & General’s diverse people networks.
Working closely with the client, architects, and wider consultant team, Motionspot’s remit spans multiple RIBA stages, providing guidance, review, and engagement to maintain inclusive design consistency through design, delivery, and occupation. Key activities and deliverables have included:
- Stage 1 – Preparation and Briefing: Inclusive Design Vision workshops, site visits to existing Legal & General workplaces, engagement with end-user community groups, and development of an Inclusive Design Vision and Strategy.
- Stage 2 – Concept Design: Inclusive design reviews of architectural design packs, development of an Inclusive Design Tracker, and participation in design workshops and end-of-stage reporting.
- Stage 3 – Spatial Coordination: Ongoing inclusive design reviews and advisory input at design meetings.
- Stages 4–7 (Future Scope): Continued review and advisory through technical design, construction, and handover; inclusive design site visits and training; development of inclusive design content for the Building Manual; and post-occupancy evaluation to capture lessons learned and user feedback.
Project Impact
The completed Legal & General headquarters will deliver a truly inclusive and sustainable workplace, providing a consistent, equitable experience for all employees and visitors. By embedding inclusive design from briefing through to post-occupancy, the building will support a wide range of users including considerations for physical, cognitive and sensory needs, neurodiversity, faith, culture and gender. Motionspot’s guidance will ensure that inclusivity remains central to design decisions, while post-occupancy evaluation will capture user feedback to inform future Legal & General workplaces and set a benchmark for best-practice inclusive design.
