Alleyn’s School
Project Brief
Motionspot was appointed as the Inclusive Design Consultant for Alleyn’s School, a progressive educational institution committed to its ‘All in Alleyn’s’ principle, aiming to create accessible and inclusive spaces across its campus in the UK, Dulwich and worldwide. The project focuses on enhancing the built environment to support the diverse needs of students, staff, and visitors, fostering respect, wellbeing, and success for all.
Project Scope
Motionspot’s scope as Inclusive Design Consultant focused on establishing an inclusive design framework for Alleyn’s School with future involvement planned for upcoming projects.
We conducted access and inclusive design audits, facilitated engagement with staff and students, and developed an Inclusive Design Vision and Principles to ensure spaces support diverse neurotypes, physical needs, and intersectional experiences, promoting independence, dignity, and equity.
- Stage 0 - Strategic Definition: Conducted Inclusive Design Vision workshops to understand the school’s diversity policies, stakeholder demographics, and desired inclusive outcomes, shaping the project’s accessibility goals.
- Stage 1 - Preparation and Briefing: Performed site visits to audit the campus’s accessible and inclusive features, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. We also facilitated engagement workshops with diverse student and staff groups to gather feedback on user experiences and inform refurbishment and new build designs.
- Stage 2 - Concept Design (Planned): Planned to apply Inclusive Design Vision and Principles to upcoming projects, including desktop reviews and continued community engagement to embed accessibility in designs like the dining hall and other refurbishments across the site.
- Stages 3-7 - Future Scope (Planned): Anticipated involvement in Spatial Coordination, Technical Design, Construction, Handover, and Use phases to ensure consistent inclusive design across major projects and capital works.
Project Impact
Motionspot’s contributions have laid a robust foundation for Alleyn’s School to achieve its ‘All in Alleyn’s’ vision, creating equitable and inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity and support wellbeing. By auditing the estate and engaging diverse community groups, we ensured the Inclusive Design Vision and Principles reflect lived experiences, fostering environments where all students, staff, and visitors feel valued. Our work sets the stage for future projects to deliver sustainable, accessible facilities, enhancing user independence and aligning with best-practice standards, with potential to influence inclusive design practices across educational institutions.
